Let’s be honest…I want my 6 year old to explore his interest in drums. And I think the bit I’ve heard him "play" in the past is cute. But I know that 3 weeks into us owning a drum set, I’d be ready to throw it out the window because of the noise. What are the pros and cons of a child learning to play on an electronic set vs. an acoustic set? If we put aside the "purity" of the sound of an acoustic set, what else is there? Would a person that learns on an electronic set have a hard time in the future adapting to an acoustic set? Also, aside from the industry standards (Roland, Yamaha, maybe Hart?), are there any reliable manufacturers? I see lots of stuff on e-bay from "Borgi", "Lloyd Audio", "OSP – Sigler Music Centers", etc. – ever heard of these? Finally, are the sound modules interchangable? For example, if I bought a Yamaha set, could I plug in a Roland sound module? If so, would it make a difference? Thanks much to anyone that takes the time to answer these questions!
Would you recommend an electronic drum set for a child learning to play?

OSP 502, Simmons SD5K, Yoki 608, Medli 502 Review
Despite the lack of reviews, I decided to purchase this item because of cost and functionality and my need for something that can do what this claims. I want to help anyone else make an informed decision so here’s my honest review: FIRST IMPRESSION: I LOVED IT. The set looks “clean” and nice…with some adjustment, it immediately reminded me of a regular kit (even though all pads are the same size. I didn’t get it for the sounds built in. I was always planning to trigger BFD, Addictive Drums, or ToonTrack with this, so…but looking at it? I would have assumed the sounds were about what they are…generic and sampled..not the best quality, but would do in a pinch. EASE OF INSTALL: No need to install, really. I plugged my MIDI cable into the back and then began tweaking inside BFD2 (learning the notes sent by the drum brain and adjusting them to kit pieces). As far as the learning the notes? BFD won hands down…ToonTrack was fairly easy, but did not tell how to do it from the start…had to figure it out on my own. Once I learned? It was NO PROBLEM for either program. FUNCTIONALITY: The brain is not as responsive as the pads. That being said? It WORKS…it does what it is supposed to. I will be getting an Alesis I/O (and here is the only reason why) because the “brain” only has inputs for the current pads. The I/O will allow me to expand the kit almost doubling it’s size, increasing my control of the pads (MIDI notes, cross talk rejection, and sensitivity), and hopefully …
